You might be really interested in reading the official FFXIV Lore forum. The people responsible for Lore often post in there to help people out with understanding the background of the world: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/forums/646-Lore

I believe if a thread has a crown on it, the lore development team from SE has given input. Some of it is pretty trivial but often it's actually an excellent source of information. There is a Lore book due out in the near future which collate a lot of the stuff from this forum along with providing new information.
