    Loony Bob (Twintania)

Default Mr. Robot - Season Two

Anyone else been watching this lately? I've finally caught up with things (although I believe another episode has aired since in US, I'll have to catch that tonight). Really enjoying how things are turning out.

And now to ignore this thread until I watch that one last episode. xD

I got two episodes from the end of the first series. I don't know why I stopped as I was really enjoying it!

I'll have to pick it back up again. Very, very original.

It was slow going in the early part of Season 2 but it's picked up since then. My favorite episode was actually the one from a couple weeks ago that didn't even have Elliot in it!

The plot is more confusing this season since there isn't a clear objective like in season 1. It's more about dealing with the aftermath of season 1. Also, the 'big twist' midway through the season was easy to guess very early on, unlike some of the twists in season 1. I'm hoping there's something less obvious to come.

Dom was an interesting addition this season but she's too much of the 'rogue cop who's always right' trope. Darlene is probably my favorite character.

Very few series excepted (Hi, GoT) I pretty much never try to predict plot twists. I definitely did not pick him being in prison all along. I mean, there are some things that to me just didn't add up after it all, but hey, I won't try to understand Elliot's mind. I loved that particular episode where he got out, though, and Leon was an epic character, I really loved him. Shame we'll probably never see him again.

Dom is cool. I like the actress. I feel like I've watched her in a few different shows but I checked her IMDb and can't place her. But yeah, it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out for her character. She's up their with my preferred characters alongside Leon, Elliot and Cisco (RIP). And if you're counting the first season, Shayla.

I kinda wish that the driver bodyguard dude didn't suddenly start blabbing in the most recent episode because I've always liked him as the quiet-but-not-completely-silent guy, he does it very well.

That was very out of character for the driver so I'm wondering what else may be going on. I've learned to not trust everything that happens in scenes Elliot is in.

I'm about 3 episodes in for season 2, and it is MUCH slower than S1. The tension in direction is still incredible but it is getting a bit much. I'm curious but I think I'll wait until it's all available and then marathon it, like I did with S1 (which I watched in one day on a work day and felt terrible about it the next day but I had to).

Pacing was really slow this season. Last 5-6 episodes were great but the first half dragged on. They are also doing the standard TV approach of having a more self-contained storyline for season 1 and then telling the broader narrative over the next several seasons, which means we probably won't get answers for quite a while. Still, those last few episodes were epic.

Also congrats to Rami Malek for winning the emmy! I have to admit, Elliot is not my favorite character and I enjoy the scenes without him more than those with him, but great to see a fringe show like this get recognition and to see someone who doesn't fit the typical 'leading man' archetype win for a leading role.

It's honestly pretty hard for most shows to truly surprise me. And I don't particularly enjoy big moments orchestrated simply to shock you (looking at you Game of Thrones!).

But Mr. Robot is SO. GOD. DAMN. GOOD. at defying expectations. It's so interesting.

I mean, last season, the Mr. Robot reveal was thing big thing, but the show acknowledged that it was a big thing in its own meta way. It was never meant to be this shocking thing because the clues were laid out very deliberately so that even if you saw the reveal coming, the payoff was still really great. And in the middle of all this, they drop this huge reveal that NO ONE was expecting, which was about Darlene and Elliot. Brilliant.

And this season, the prison element in the first few episodes was so obvious to a lot of viewers. Visually, I knew almost immediately that something was off, and the basketball scenes really cemented the idea of this all happening in the prison. So they telegraph all this happening and then leaves your jaw on the floor with the Leon/Dark Army reveal. And then later on in the season, the show teases and teases and teases the Tyrell stuff to the point where you convince yourself it's all a fakeout and then SURPRISE! But the biggest oh trout moment for me was the reveal of the FBI investigation. Holy trout. I found that entire sequence to be utterly masterful television. Like, so smurfing spectacular. All along we had this idea in our head about the FBI and it was all wrong!! My god.

I did find all the stuff in the beginning of the season to be unnecessarily slow. I wanted to trust the show, and I understand WHY it was so slow and methodical because I think it was meant to counter the mile-a-minute aspect of the end of the season. But seriously, it was so smurfing slow.

I'm not sure if the end of the season redeemed the first several episodes of the season. But I still feel like Mr. Robot is doing things that no other show is doing. And the high points of this show are really smurfing high.
