Anyway, regarding the original FFVI, I think it ties with IX in that it has the most check marks for what Final Fantasy fans want out of an entry in the series, but I also have this problem where combat in both games can feel a little tedious. Also not a fan of how either game handles character progression. They make up for it with some great character writing, music and set pieces though. Glad you've been enjoying this revisit!
Yeah, I'm figuring out the Esper stuff now. Dummy me, I could have had Cyan learn Cure which would have helped a lot during the Celes-less segments at the end. But oh well, at least I got it figured out now. It was pretty simple, I just expected to learn spells naturally when I had the Esper equipped instead of having to earn Spell Points and then buying them.

I went and got Gau some more Rages. Apparently BNW removed most of them which were useless anyway I guess? Also recruited Mog, probably won't ever use him.

As for the "most Final Fantasy" Final Fantasy game, it's funny you mention the two steampunk FF's and not the "modern" entries or the more medieval entries. VII will always be the FF game for me since it was my first. (and the fact it's really good)
