In any game, not just FF. Obviously they don't have to be titled as "Black Mage" but just go for the offensive magic type of characters
Who are your favourites?
I was having a devil of a time thinking of someone outside FF but then it hit me. Elly from Xenogears is pretty much a Black Mage. It's peculiar given her character b u she has only attack magic. She's also fascinating and I love her.
Hands down it's probably Edwin for Baldur's Gate. He's far from the most nuanced character in the series, but he's the funniest thing in it except for perhaps Minsc. Also he's the only true Mage in Vanilla BG2.

Dorian is the sassy gay black mage I was waiting all my life for. One of my all-time favourite video game characters.
In terms of gameplay, one of my favourite black mage type characters to play is Maya from Borderlands 2. Space magic and guns!!!!

True beauty exists in things that last only for a moment.
Current Mood: And it's been a long December and there's reason to believe. Maybe this year will be better than the last. I can't remember all the times I tried to tell myself. To hold on to these moments as they pass...
Master Vivi of course.
A runner up for me would be Jansen from Lost Odyssey. Going in I thought I was going to hate his character, but he ended up being one of my favorites. Sequel when?
EDIT: Oh, also Rydia. I often don't even think of her as a Black Mage with the whole summoner plot.
Xelha from Baten Kaitos. Pent from Fire Emblem 7 gets an honorable mention as well.
As far as Final Fantasy is concerned, Rydia, hands down.
I also really like Velvet from Odin Sphere
...Neku Sakuraba counts as a Black Mage, right?
