It is a (quite good) ROMhack that, basically, remixes the original NES game with bug fixes, tweaked spells and equipment, bonus dungeons, and shifted story progression.

Is it easier than the original version?

The serious social experiment one, lol. More like the serious loss of a social life one. But yeah, that one.

Ehhhh, it breaks about even. The bugfixes and improved spells significantly reduce the difficulty of the core game, especially if one follows the game's intended 'Fiends -> Legendary Weapons -> Final Dungeon' path, but the heavy focus on elemental gear alongside more enemies using magic bumps the difficulty back up roughly to par. I can say the classic four thief challenge run is a hell of a lot easier though, as those guys are all kinds of stabby madness now.

Hmm, hmm. I might play that version, but it feels wrong playing a hack before the original. Let's see how about this? I play the original, but if I end up getting too frustrated I switch to the hack?

It depends on what you find frustrating about the original title: the two remain mechanically similar, so relatively little on that front will improve between the experiences, but the better spells, classes, and equipment clarity will alleviate those issues if they are what is bothering you. Just be aware of the heavy focus on elemental resistance and exploitation in Negative One -- there isn't a silly good Silver Sword to carry you through the first 3/4ths of the game like in the original version, so physical characters will need to carry multiple weapons after a point in the game and can be nigh useless in boss fights if you are using the wrong one.

Are you looking to play though FF1 for the first time? Or just the original NES version of the title? If it is the former, FF1 Anniversary Edition is probably the best option, as it does a very good job updating the game to modern standards and adds in its own bonus dungeons / equipment / bosses, and the final boss actually has his own music.

The last one I've played was FF VI, but recently I've been playing IX, VI, VII, XII and IV going back and forth when I have time to do so... when the wife watches TV I jump on the PC and play IV, when my friend comes over to record we've been playing VI on his SNES Mini. On my PS 4 I've been playing VII, IX and XII. I've beaten them all before, I'm going through them now and taking my time with them. It's a blast!!

FFXV Royal Edition. Everything is fairly decent but the story still feels a bit incomplete. The flying car is trash and I did not complete that jumping maze.

I've been playing FFXIII-2 most recently. I actually quite like it.
