So I'm playing Zelda Ocarina of Time for the first time and holy crap having to go into this menu to equip/unequip these boots which are a game mechanic for an entire dungeon is goddam awful. I understand they fixed it in newer versions, rightly so. I'm powering through it but urgh.

Not much else springs to mind off the top of my head. More the inability to do something, such as selecting multiple units using click and drag in RTS. I replayed Dune II a few years ago and not being able to do that was frustrating.

That is the worst level in ocarina. Probably in the whole series.

I can't wrap my head around the water temple hate. It was a good level.

It was horrendous. If you don't pull/push that block in a room at the start... you are in a world of hurt.

Also, like BoB says, the N64 version with the equipping/unequipping of the iron boots is horrible.

I hated it it was a kid; as an adult, I can better intuit where Nintendo would hide the next key or objective. Wondering aimlessly and changing the water levels to find oh, I need to bomb a wall in this room to progress was the worst. Now, I'm look "this room is suspiciously empty, seems bigger on the map, and oh hey, is that a crack in the wall" as opposed to like "who needs maps, honestly?"

When I last played it on the 3ds, I disliked the shadow temple more. Something about it just irked me. I suppose it was the lens of truth having to be constantly bothered my natural urge to conserve magic.

Outfit customization qualities: some gear "sounds" really cool yet never alters the character's appearance. Other games do the opposite wherein outfits are aesthetics only. The worst offenders are games that give significant stat upgrades or unique abilities while also implementing customization of character appearance. The latter forces you to give a character design you put your heart into so that you can get that ability or stat upgrade for progressing the game. It's small gripes, but it bugs me.
Note: In Final Fantasy VII, I initially thought Nanaki's weapons did not change his appearance, but looking closer at LIMIT Break animations, I noticed the subtle differences. Unfortunately, the same could be said for the bracers and accessories found in the game. This has also really bugged me.

I also dislike equipment that bears a single use in-game.
    Jack: How do you know?

Will: It's more of a feeling really.

Jack: Well, that's not scientific. Feeling isn't knowing. Feeling is believing. If you believe it, you can't know because there's no knowing what you believe. Then again, no one should believe what they know either. Once you know anything that anything becomes unbelievable if only by virtue of the fact you now... know it. You know?

    Will: No.

If Demolition Man were remade today

Huxley: What's wrong? You broke contact.
Spartan: Contact? I didn't even touch you.
Huxley: Don't you want to make love?
Spartan: Is that what you call this? Why don't we just do it the old-fashioned way?
    Huxley: NO!
    Spartan: Whoa! Okay, calm down.
Huxley: Don't tell me to calm down!
Spartan: What's gotten into you? 'Cause it sure as hell wasn't me.
Huxley: Physical relations in the way of intercourse are no longer acceptable John Spartan.
Spartan: What? Why the hell not?
Huxley: It's the law, John. And for your information, the very idea that you suggested it makes me feel personally violated.
Spartan: Wait a minute... violated? Huxley what the hell are you accusing me of here?
Huxley: You need to leave, John.
    Spartan: But Huxley.
    Huxley: Get out!
Moments later Spartan is arrested for "violating" Huxley.

By the way, that's called satire. Get over it.

For some reason the thing that immediately jumps out at me for games I revisit, or retro games that go too far is the thing where I locks you into a jump arc without any control. It was dated even on the NES when you have something like Mario, jumping in the Castlevania games is almost unforgivable, and they're not even the worst offenders

And I agree with everyone that said grinding. It was the RPG equivalent of quarter-munching replacement on home console, where Contra had one-hit kills, Dragon Quest had grinding

When I made this thread, I was thinking tank controls. OMG are they bitch to use and their only purpose is to allow you to back up as you fire. It's the hardest thing about playing some of the old Survival Horror games.

Manual saving. I got so used to auto saves over the years that now when I go back and play older games I find myself going absurd spans of time between saves, whereas growing up I habitually saved after everything I did.

Also, I find insane levels of grinding hard to deal with now. I don't mind moderate grinding, but like, I told myself I was going to get the platinum of FFXHD, then I realized you needed to complete the monster arena, get Wakka's sigil, and max out the sphere grid and I did everything else except those three things and gave up.
