Default Your thoughts on video games in 2017?

I really have struggled to find a game I really desired to play this year. Admittedly I'm very much a peripheral figure in the world of Nintendo who had two massive releases but even as an RPG fan I just never felt inclined to play Nier, Persona 5 or any others I can think of. I am legit struggling to think of any game that came out in 2017 that I bought... Mass Effect Andromeda is probably it, and I didn't get far into it either. I've instead just been playing older games. There are, however, a few games in 2018 I'm looking forward to. I feel like 2017 was a real gap year for me.

Anyone else get that kinda vibe?

Still, might be interested in playing Breath of the Wild once Sarah is finished with it, and also will probably play some of the other games out eventually. Just nothing to grab me...

EDIT: Just browing a list of releases, forgot Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was out this year. Maybe I'll give that a go. Also kinda vaguely interested in playing Horizon Zero Dawn someday. Maybe... eventually...

2017 has been a quality year for video games, and I feel that most people will lean this way.

Someone who hasn't played any Persona game previously! The series has always been something I've known about and had a vague interest in but it's never grabbed me. I was watching someone play it the other day and I'm still not sure it's for me.

Ah, Persona 5. A game I've been constantly saying I'll try but keep forgetting.

I've only bought two console games this year. Tekken 7 and COD:WW2 with the latter pure garbage. I just think RPG's are going down a different route nowadays to when I adored them. Don't think we'll be seeing any PS1 style Final Fantasy-esque type games any time soon due to with commercialism etc., which is sad.

As someone who generally enjoys Nintendo stuff, getting a Switch on day one was the best thing I've done for myself. This year has been rough, as and lame as this might sound, a small part of what prevents me from going over the edge is some good video games. I know that everyone pokes fun/hates Nintendo for relying on Mario and Zelda so much, but I think now most people can forgive that this time around considering the quality of both Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. I mean, I am still amazed that Nintendo finally learned to stop holding players on such a tight leash (even though said tight leash games were still well made).

Not only that, but the Switch just has so many damn good games, especially if you are into the independent developer scene. I believe that Jim Sterling (I don't watch him much, but I catch him when hanging out with certain friends) noted that a lot of those devs love it because unlike Steam, they don't have to compete with 80 half assed 'LOL MEME SIMULATOR" games being released daily. Their games actually have a shot of gaining traction.

I know Sonic Mania isn't a Switch exclusive, but that was the only means that I can play it (I think I can buy it for my Xbox One, but I don't like that type of controller for an old school styled Sonic game). That game seriously smurfing healed me. It's exactly what I needed over the summer.

So yeah, long story short, while I certainly didn't only have my nose buried in my Switch, I think that's the best gaming purchase I made this year and I certainly got the most enjoyment out of it. Keep it up, Nintendo.

The only 2017 releases I've touched this year are Mass Effect Andromeda, Persona 5 and Doki Doki Literature Club, although I am also due to get Nier for Christmas. I don't know whether that means I've thought 2017 hasn't served up many worthwhile games or if on the whole I just can't really be bothered to get brand new games on release anymore because they'll be on sale for peanuts within a year or two.

2017 was a pretty damn good year for VN releases and localizations that's for sure. Little Busters, Wonderful Everyday, Umineko Chiru, Muv-Luv Alternative, Dies irae, Hoshizora no Memoria, Danganronpa V3, Chaos;Child and of course the sensation that is Doki Doki Literature Club. Really can't complain.

On the more gameplay-y side of things I really love both FFXII: TZA and Golden Fantasia.

A great year with fantastic updates to Mario & Zelda. I also enjoyed ME Andromeda and Pokemon Ultra Moon. There are still many others I have yet to play like Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, and Metroid Samus Returns.

It's been a decent year for gaming with me, but not because of new releases. Financial situations preventing me from trying out anything new meant I spent most of the year playing catch up with my backlog. On the bright side, I've decided that the PS4 has largely been worth the investment, which is great for me since I still regard the PS3 to be one of the weaker consoles I've owned. I mean I am Setsuna, FFXV, Bloodborne, and Persona 5 all back to back will make most people happy. I still have The Last Guardian and Fallout 4 to look forward to as well as Type-0. I still need to pick up Dark Souls III and Guilty Gear Xrd as well.

Of the new releases I've played this year, Persona 5 was fantastic and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinity looks like a return to form for the series after the lackluster MvC3 entries. It's still not as good as MvC1 or the earlier Marvel and Vs. fighters (give me my six buttons back Capcom!) but it's much more engaging and feels a bit better balanced outside of Monster Hunter being a weird character that can switch from being a heavy to a light weight bruiser. Overall, I may pick it up once the roster gets a bit bigger.

While I have not had a chance to play the full releases, I had a blast with the Nier:Automata and Resident Evil 7 demos. South Park:The Fractured But Whole was a surprising improvement over the Stick of Truth in just about every way except maybe story. I also can't wait to pick up Romancing SaGa 2 which sounds incredibly interesting. I've also been having a blast with FFXII: The Zodiac Age, which has enough changes and improvements to feel like a very different game from the original. Hell, the number of rereleases and throw back entries were kind of high this year. Next year is looking good as well since I still have the Secret of Mana remake and Dissidia NT to look forward to in the first few months and Mega Man 11 isn't too far away either.

Honestly, this has been Nintendo's year, and the whole year just feels like one long sting of reasons to own a Switch cause Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, and Xenoblade 2 all look great or at least interesting. Not to mention Samus Returns on the 3DS. They've definitely been hogging all of the spotlight this year.

Overall, while I didn't play a whole lot of new games this year, I felt it had some great entries released that have me pretty excited, and my wishlist has only been growing over time.

I rarely buy new games at all but some really good ones came out this year, that I played:

    Divinity: Original Sin 2
    Cosmic Star Heroine
    Trackless

And a few others that I'd really like to:

    Persona 5
    Nioh
    Horizon Zero Dawn
    Thimbleweed Park
    Etrian Odyssey 5
    Xenoblade Chronicles 2
    Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
    ELEX

Not counting a bunch of really good ports/rereleases and Dragon Quest XI coming out in Japan. And surely some games I've forgotten.

That list is better than I thought it would be and I already thought it would be good. Might be one of the best years for video games ever.

2017 will go down as one of the best years in gaming history.

In an era where lootboxes and microtransactions spread across games like a disease, it's a miracle that so many quality titles were untainted by them.

Between games like Persona 5, Resident Evil 7, and Super Mario Odyssey, I don't think there's ever been a more stacked lineup in a single year.

2017 was chock full of releases I played/want to play, I expect 2018 will be a lot more empty.

Off the top of my head, not counting remasters/ports:

Resident Evil 7, Tales of Berseria, Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami (being a full remake), Nier Automata, Persona 5, Ys 8, Trails in the Sky 3, Tokyo Xanadu, Destiny 2, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Xenoblade 2, Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild (disappointing though it may have been to me, still entertaining), Atelier Firis, Nioh, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Prey, Mass Effect: Andromeda (again, entertaining despite being disappointing), FF14 Stormblood, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider

    ..and more
