Default A movie you went into with low expectations but ended up loving

Every time a movie gets brought up somewhere there always has to be that one person who needs to inform you that it's overhyped or not as good as everyone says it is.

So let's hear something different. What's a movie you expected to bomb but you really enjoyed instead?

    Edge of Tomorrow/Live, Die, Repeat.

What a great film, and a real sleeper hit.

The three that come to mind in recent memory for me are:

Iron Man - Was never a fan of the character and was leery of Marvel getting into the film franchise considering how badly Sony and Fox squandered Spiderman and the X-Men franchises. Ended up being pretty blown away and it's still one of my favorite Marvel films.

Transformers - I went in with abysmal expectations for this, and while it's still not as cool as the 80s animated film or the animated franchises in general, I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't awful. The sequels were awful, but the first one was kind of charming in an awkward sort of way.

Casablanca - This one falls into "overhyped and lives up to it" type of expectation. I was on a classic film binge and got to this piece which I felt I would probably like but still consider overrated, only to wind up loving the film and picking up my own copy of it eventually.

I definitely liked Edge of Tomorrow a lot more than I thought I would.

I also liked Nightcrawler more than I thought I would.

I don’t know what else. There was a time where I would go see random movies in theaters without any real expectations, and I saw some gems (like Nightcrawler), but I can’t remember what all I saw.

I agree! But I was told it was terrible, and just trash, basically everything bad you can think of.

And it's one of my favorite movies of all time.

I have watched this film twice more since you first made us all watch it, Sam. I made my friend Hannah watch it while she was drunk. We then made all our friends watch it (and devised a drinking game for it). It’s something you have to pass on like the videotape in The Ring except no-one (that I know of) dies.

If any of you crazy cats want to play The Room drinking game I came up with... here are the rules.

    - Take a drink anytime Johnny says “Oh hi [insert name]”
    - Take a drink anytime Johnny laughs
    - Take a drink every time someone throws a football to someone else.
    - Take a drink anytime Mark (or someone else) says “He/Johnny is my best friend”
    - Take a drink anytime Lisa (or someone else) says “I don’t love him/Johnny anymore”
    - Take a drink anytime Denny says something inappropriate.
    - Down your drinks when Johnny utters the classic line “You’re tearing me apart, Lisa!”

It is one of the greatest films of all time.

Remember how mad you were at me for making it watch you, and you swore you'd never watch it again?

I'll have to think about it, but I agree that Edge of Tomorrow is a really good answer.

Singin' in the Rain. I was expecting a camp '50s musical with good choreography, but a plot ranging from nonsensical to non-existent, and characters who are barely more than empty shells. Instead, the cast are varied and engaging, and the plot is a thoughtful, witty, nostalgic reflection on times gone by. I didn't see it until this year, but I'm glad I took the time.

Solo: A Star Wars movie. I wouldn't say I "loved" it, but it was MUCH better than I expected it to be given all the bad press surrounding it. I still stand by it being the best SW movie since the original trilogy, it's not like that's hard to accomplish.

I actually liked Ant Man and the Wasp a good amount more than I thought I would.
