Default Kingdom Hearts as a fighting game?

Fun discussion I had with a coworker as we both dive back into the series. If SE decided to take this series massive roster and make a fighting game, would you be for it? Also, who would you main and what would you like the battle system to be like?

No. I don't even like most of the characters from the series, so there's no draw there and fighting games are not among my favorite genres. Plus based on the way KH does action RPGs, I'm skeptical it would be good as fighters go.

I've spent far too much of my day contemplating what I would want from a game like this if it were to be made. I'm generally never going to turn down a fighting game or rhythm game adaption of a franchise.

I would likely recycle a lot of the design from the original Dissidia for this title. Like FF, I feel KH is a series more about flash and visual cool factor over finesse and frame by frame execution. So a 3D fighting engine that would allow for stylized acrobatic move sets and zipping around large arenas just feels right for the series. Maps will be sprawling arenas you can zip around with like the main square of Twilight Town as an example of what I'm thinking of. Characters can use non-offensive flowmotion controls to move around the arena quickly.

I would drop the base "Bravery" mechanic though, KH is many things but's always been more of an action game than an RPG so a numbers game would be a poor fit. Instead, I would use a simplified version of Birth by Sleeps Command Deck/Style form instead to give it a taste of RPG without completely interfering with the action mechanics. The combat will likely be all about performing long combo strings. To balance this, characters also have a Revenge Meter that fills up as they take continual damage. Once filled, the character can either perform a revenge attack to both break out of the combo and do damage, or they can perform a blow away attack that will send their opponent flying across the arena and away from them with a simple two button press for less skilled players.

So characters can equip up to three abilities that work like special attacks that can be executed in a battle. Most of the abilities will be either magic spells or popular attacks like Strike Raid or Blitz. Landing these attacks on an opponent will build up a Drive/Style Form gauge along with just combos. Depending on which abilities you bring into battle, once the gauge is filled, the character will enter their Drive/Style mode. Each character will have two modes, a Light and Dark one, and their move set will change. They stay in this mode until the meter completely depletes.

Drive/Style modes are like temporary super modes, similar to Dissidia's EX mode but with larger changes. Light Mode is a speedy and combo friendly mode that in addition to being a slashy combo making machine, has access to more finisher moves that do damage based on the number and length of combos performed while in this mode. Basically, you want to try and kill your opponent very quickly. Dark Mode is less combo friendly but base attack power goes up significantly in addition to their new move sets, and this mode will not raise the Revenge Meter when it lands an attack.

    Character examples:

Sora: Light Mode: Final Form / Dark Mode: Antiform - Mainly based off his KHII incarnation Sora can utilize a move set that takes from all his drive forms from that game. The most balanced character.

Riku: Light Mode: Shining Hammer / Dark Mode: Darkest Aura - Riku is a high offense character but has fewer defensive options. His Light Mode alters his outfit to his blindfolded/black robe outfit while his Dark Mode is his signature outfit from his Ansem possessed self.

Roxas: Light Mode: Dual-Wield / Dark Mode: Two Becomes One - Roxas is a more aggressive version of Sora with a few similar moves but tends to have more of an offensive bent such as theatrical swings that draw him closer to the enemy. His keyblade changes based on which mode he's in. His Light Mode can utilize abilities like Magic Hour while his Dark Mode is slower but can deal heavy damage with abilities like Zantesuken.

Ansem-Xehanort: Light Mode: World Chaos / Dark Mode: Guardian - Ansem is more of a long range specialist with a few attacks that allow him to zip around the field and do damage. His Light Mode has him wield his double sided Soul Eater he uses in the final battle gaining a faster and close range skill set. His Guardian Dark Mode allows him to use his Guardian to double his attacks.

Xemnas: Light Mode: Final Form / Dark Mode: Armored Form - Xemnas combines quick speedy combos with his trademark shield attacks to keep enemies from retaliating. Final Form ups the anti with more projectile follow ups and faster attacks. Armored Mode trades these for access to mid and long range Organization member attacks and a heavier emphasis on keeping opponents away from them.

King Mickey: Light Mode: Star Seeker/Star Shard / Dark Mode: Cloaked - Mickey uses his speed and confusing move set to keep opponents off guard. Light Mode ups the anti by adding the Star Shard teleport and Sorceror's Apprentice themed magic attacks to open up his combo potential. Dark Mode doesn't lose speed, but lowers his overall damage while raising his crit potential through the roof, making him very dangerous if battled for too long.

Donald Duck: Light Mode: Fantasista / Dark Mode: Meteor Strike - Donald is another long range specialist who tries to keep opponents away from him with magic combos. In his light Mode, he dons his Fanasista Wand and gains access to special abilities like Fantasia and Flare Force, filly the arena with even more spells and projectiles to watch out for. In Dark Mode, he equips the Meteor Strike and gains a speedier melee offense with moves like Blazing Donald and Stardust Blitz. He also gains "armor" defense and is difficult to flinch.

Goofy: Light Mode: Mighty Shield / Dark Mode: Seven Elements - Googy is more of a rush down character who uses his charge moves to knock his opponents around and uses Tornado to catch them off guard. In Light Mode he equips the Mighty Shield which allows a few follow up attacks to his basic moves and extends their range and speed, as well as giving him access to Goofy Turbo. His Dark Mode gives him access to moves like Teamwork and opens up more long range options for him.

Secret Character - KH1 Sora - Plays a bit like Limit Form from KHII with access to all his popular moves from that game with slight animation changes to differentiate them from their equippable equivalents. His Light Mode would be Dream Eater where he gains access to some of his Dream Eater Link abilities. His dark mode would be Chain of Memories where he uses unique sleights from that game like Blizzard Raid and Lethal Frame

Obviously we would do more characters, but this is an example of what I'm thinking of how the L/D mechanic would work for people. I would probably add in a few secret characters as well besides KH1 Sora. I probably wouldn't use everyone from Org. XIII and I would love to add a few Diseny heroes as well of course.

While all of the original worlds would likely be made into arenas, the Disney worlds I would choose would be:

    Agrabah Cave of Wonders
    Hercules Colesium
    Halloweentown
    Neverland
    Wonderland/Bizarre Room
    Toybox
    Tangled world
    Timeless River
    Tron world

I always want to like fighting games, but I just can’t anymore. I think it’s mainly because I don’t have the friends to play them with like when I was a kid.

I’ve yet to play Dissidia, but I do think a more 3D arena approach would be best. I’m picturing a mix of Soul Calibur and Ehrgeiz in my head, but I’m sure Dissidia would be the best fit. I wouldn’t mind a 2D style though in the same vein as Persona 4 Arena it BlazBlue. I think it would still look cool and flashy while being more different from the original games battle systems.

All in all, I’d probably buy this game if it existed, and I would proceed to never play it unless it had an interesting single player mode.

I want the "Mortal Kombat-y " sort of game Mickey Mouse spent all night playing in the short Runaway Brain.

Something like Dissidia would work extremely well for Kingdom Hearts.

Lol, looks like someone went out and did something about this. A fan modded the hell out of Dissidia 012 and made their own KH fighting game. Here's the Launch Trailer

It will have it's own story mode that seems like a what if scenario concerning the ending to KHIII.
