Default ADB and the Future of FF.

So XII was the last game Hiroyuki Ito worked on, and thus ADB (Active Dimensional Battle) is the last incarnation of the battle system's he's developed for a main console entry. In an interview he gave some years ago, saying there was things he wanted to improve on with XII's version of ATB he wanted to for a future entry in the series, comparing XII's system to FFIV's roughshod version of ATB. Yet, he's waiting for technology to catch up with what he wants to do.

With all this said, would you like to see XII's incarnation of the battle system return? What improvements would you like to see? This doesn't necessarily mean the License Board, simply the battle mechanics and gambit system.

Saying this again, if they ever want to remake FFVIII and give it a new battle system, I think that a FFXII system would work well for it. It would make drawing for those 100 Blizzards less tedious.

As longs as they keep Rinoa's Missile Dog though.

I definitely want to see it make a come back and I love how some Western developers have appropriated if. I heard Dragon Age uses gambits and so does the Pillars of Eternity sequel - over there it’s even more obvious, to the point that the devs even acknowledged FFXII as the inspiration. That warms my heart.

I'll let you know whenever I get around to playing The Zodiac Age. To be honest I wasn't a huge fan of Final Fantasy XII's battle system, and I never did get around to completing the game (although I think I came close). I think that it was just so different to what I expected from a Final Fantasy game, but I feel I'd appreciate it much more now.

I definitely don't want to see FFXII's battle system return, but if it does, they have to be smart about the Gambits. Having spells specifically for healing multiple party members, but having no trigger conditions that rely on multiple party members HP/status was inexcusable. It's such a glaringly obvious oversight, the game deserves harsh criticism for that alone.

Like, no, I don't want to rely on lower HP of a single individual to choose Curaja over Curaga. That's just stupid. How about a two or more party members with HP < X% option, dummies?

I really loved FFXII's battle system. It still held the same ATB concept of it's more recent predecessors while feeling more "natural." I wouldn't say I had any complaints about being transported to a new location to fight enemies but having them on the same map and being able to move freely around that map during battle had a really nice feel to it. FFXV's action RPG style was very fun too but I like that FFXII could accomplish this while still keeping that Final Fantasy feel.
