    Default Monsters dropping money

Have you ever created an in game reason for why you can shake down a frog for 13 gil?

Maybe they hoard the items of travelers who came before you, or took the loot from weaker enemies. Do frogs have pockets?

Of course, the real reason is so you have a way to buy items from shops while you altruistically save the world. It's just one of those things I think about, like how nobody has a toilet.

At least Final Fantasy VIII gave you a salary :^)

    Nope, just gamey things.

On one hand I can appreciate games that do away with this and have monsters drop items and junk you can sell instead, on the other hand that just adds an unnecessary step in the name of "immersion".

I always assume the money is from travelers/monster hunters the monsters had eaten prior to being slain by the party. They just fish it out of their corpses since it's stuck in their lower intestine.

Depends on the type of monster. Dragons are notorious treasure hoarders. Gold golems are literally made of gold, so no mystery there. Orcs, goblins, and the like can basically be treated like humans. You'd expect them to carry money. Other monsters may have various other reasons for having gold on or in them.

Another possibility is it's just a streamlined version of what some other games do where monsters parts can be traded for money. Essentially it just assumes your character does the trading for you so you don't have to waste your time.

Since you mentioned VIII. Is there any other game that gives you money like that?

I can't think of any, which is strange because it seems lile an ideal solution to increasing realism without the annoyance of trading monster parts. Persona 4 and 5 let you make money doing part time jobs, but shadows still drop money and working jobs is not a very viable strategy for making most of your money.

The closest I can think of is Arc the Lad 2 where you really only gained money by taking on monster hunting contracts.

I have never really thought about why the monsters drop money. I always thought it was pretty interesting.

I definitely liked the way monster loot dropped in Final Fantasy XII but the extra bazaar mechanics made it a little more complicated. I think something like Monster Hunter probably handles gaining things from monsters better, but I haven't played it so I can't comment on the accuracy.

The secret is the money is made of monster blood.

I love the way Earthbound did it. Instead of getting money directly from fights, your dad puts in into your bank account and you withdraw what you need from an ATM
