Except if most of the story ends up being the same, it'll be hard to call it a sequel.
As I've suggested in another thread, my theory is that the only reason they're doing this is to cast some doubt onto certain events in the story (Aerith's death).
So it won't end up being very different in the end. It'll be a bit of a bluff to keep people guessing and speculating about what's coming.
