You get to do it (maybe once?) and then you're denied all future name changes.

I'm Lone Wolf Leonhart to this day because Leeza said if I changed my name people wouldn't know who I am anymore. It'd be harder to keep track of people, etc.

I remember me and Zeldy were going to get Married and it was a bait and switch where I was actually getting married to Dan but Dan didn't show up so I married LMA... Fun fact, when I joined in 2000 you were allowed one thread to celebrate a postcount achievement. You could only do it once, but you could make a thread that was like "I just made my 1,000th post!" and people would celebrate or make fun of you or something. I remember Acmlm and Drex, or at least I think it was those two, that would be at the top postcount at that ime.
