Thread: Gina Carano trashed for sharing Yoda memes

Colbert Gina Carano trashed for sharing Yoda memes

Gina Carano has been accused of inciting violence with her political views. People claim her meme posts deliberately belittle the supreme importance of this year's election. She supposedly "likes" "anti-BLM" tweets. Apparently, this all comes down to her being a "Trump person..?"

Like Chris Pratt, Gina is not really openly political. And again, for this, she gets crapped on. "Fire Gina", "violence against protesters", "racist, transphobic, alt right Trump lemming", "don't want a Trump supporter on my favorite show", "stick to porn", "Covid denier", "right wing conspiracy theorist", "spreading lies about the election because Trump didn't win."

Again, this is a "free" country and we should be allowed to have political opinions that differ from our neighbors without having those people attempt to shred our dignity and undermine our integrity.

On an unrelated but still related note, JRR Martin has been reamed out on Twitter for his turn as the host of the Hugo awards wherein he apparently mispronounced the names of some PoC authors and dared to mention the names of authors who may hold "regressive beliefs"... okay.

I had to look this one up, and I don't really understand it. Maybe it will come up in Yes Yes No in the future.

My advice to you would be to stay off Twitter, dude. Nothing good comes from Twitter. Back in my day when we just had internet forums, the trolls were much easier to contain and much more amusing, really. Take yourself, for example, Mercen-X. We clearly don't see eye-to-eye politically or even philosophically but I kinda like your random 'celebrity getting trashed on Twitter' threads and the occasional off-the-wall post. That's what's wrong with our country today. The trolls don't have any finesse anymore. And we're all too divided. I long for the days when us trolls could flippantly poke fun at one another but at the end of the day come back together in pursuit of the common good: internet reputation points.

I don't even know who she is, but she sure tweets a lot of politics for someone who is "not openly political."

To Mercen-X "openly political" means "says things he doesn't like."

Not how free speech works bud. And if someone holds racist, homophobic, or other in any way bigoted beliefs they shred their own dignity and demonstrate their own lack of integrity. Say stupid things win stupid prizes.

This exactly. And he always has to follow it up with the worst takes. But someone who's fairly openly sexist like Mercen-x doesn't often have the best takes.

George RR Martin is a good bloke who certainly meant no harm, and as he himself said he struggles to pronounce his own character's names. However,
dared to mention the names of authors who may hold "regressive beliefs"
I think you're being specious with this one.

He repeatedly invoked John W. Campbell. John W. Campbell who said that black people were unhappy at being freed because they were natural slaves. John W. Campbell who said that slavery was a good thing because they had a better standard of living than in Africa. John W. Campbell who said that there should be segregated schools because there were no black geniuses. And continued to say this trout throughout the 1960's and published essays about it - it wasn't a one-off slip of the tongue. If those aren't regressive beliefs, I don't know what would meet that criteria. Let's not try to compare this to someone who holds moderate conservative views.

Now, look, there's no question: GRRM does not hold these views, and just by referencing Campbell in a sci fi context, even repeatedly, it doesn't suddenly mean they are his views. At the same time, there's hundreds of science fiction writers who aren't racist morons who you can call upon and celebrate the work of. You just don't need to do it. I don't think Martin deserved as much harshness as he got. However, it was still definitely a misstep and tone deaf on his part.

Okay, you can slap my wrist later because I'm pretending to be a mod here. But we have three threads with the same content more or less that has really nothing to do with The Lounge as much as it has to do with Academia. So...

That's funny. Because that's exactly what that phrase means to the hardcore liberals who want Gina Carano fired from Mandalorian for liking Tweets by people with right-leaning views.

On this, we agree. I didn't bother posting any of these in Academia because I prefer not to sully that forum with topics that seem more appropriate to TMZ.

I deeply apologize to everyone for being a drain on your souls if you believe you have them. I haven't had a real discussion in Eyes On for some time and I was just testing the waters. A painful reminder as to why I usually just keep my opinion to myself. I appreciate your candor in these difficult times. God bless you.
    Jack: How do you know?

Will: It's more of a feeling really.

Jack: Well, that's not scientific. Feeling isn't knowing. Feeling is believing. If you believe it, you can't know because there's no knowing what you believe. Then again, no one should believe what they know either. Once you know anything that anything becomes unbelievable if only by virtue of the fact you now... know it. You know?

    Will: No.

If Demolition Man were remade today

Huxley: What's wrong? You broke contact.
Spartan: Contact? I didn't even touch you.
Huxley: Don't you want to make love?
Spartan: Is that what you call this? Why don't we just do it the old-fashioned way?
    Huxley: NO!
    Spartan: Whoa! Okay, calm down.
Huxley: Don't tell me to calm down!
Spartan: What's gotten into you? 'Cause it sure as hell wasn't me.
Huxley: Physical relations in the way of intercourse are no longer acceptable John Spartan.
Spartan: What? Why the hell not?
Huxley: It's the law, John. And for your information, the very idea that you suggested it makes me feel personally violated.
Spartan: Wait a minute... violated? Huxley what the hell are you accusing me of here?
Huxley: You need to leave, John.
    Spartan: But Huxley.
    Huxley: Get out!
Moments later Spartan is arrested for "violating" Huxley.

By the way, that's called satire. Get over it.

Yeah holding people responsible for being bigoted and therefore advocating for harming people for things they have no control over is such a bad thing.

'Right-leaning views' is like, 'government shouldn't subsidize health care,' or 'cut taxes for rich people'. Places where you can fall on a range of the ideological spectrum. Anti-BLM is not 'right-leaning', it is radical conservatism. BLM is a movement about stopping black people from being murdered in cold blood by the police and giving them the same rights and privileges that white people get in this country. There is no 'right-leaning' on this. Either you are OK with black people being murdered or you are not. If you are OK with it, you are not 'right-leaning', you are a racist.

Some things, and some people, indeed never change I see.
