    Question So... the PlayStation 5

I s there really a reason to bother with it yet? I mean I get it has been screwed by the pandemic and what not, but I'm looking around and wondering why anyone would bother with next gen yet despite being four years in. Most of the titles I want for it are still available for PS4, so what does this system actually offer?

For me, the purpose of consoles was to pick up and play at an acceptable level of stability and graphical fidelity. My PC loads games faster and is more stable than any console these days, so there just isn't a point to them.

The near-instantaneous load speeds really cannot be understated, even as a regular PC gamer who's been using SSDs for years I was surprised by just how fast it is. Though it's really not the type of thing you can appreciate until you've experienced it and then gone back to the PS4. The haptics and resistance triggers on the controller are also excellent in the games that support the functionality.

Not having to re-install an entire game everytime a patch is released for it is also a massive quality of life bonus over the PS4 too. Oh it also doesn't sound like a jumbo jet taking off when placed under heavy load.

In terms of titles, I mean really that's down to your personal preference and I doubt any amount of people saying what PS5 exclusives or PS5 versions of cross-gen games they've enjoyed is going to change your mind on that one now, is it? If it doesn't have anything you want on it, don't buy one... /thread

Though we seem to be at the tipping point now where Sony, and developers, seem to feel that there's a big enough install base (even with the ongoing global chip shortage) that we might actually start seeing more and more titles being PS5 exclusive going forward and the next-gen will truly begin.

Personally I've actually been using my PS5 a fair amount over the past few months, as my PC is getting on for 7 years old now and starting to show its age - but as I'm moving countries soon I don't want to shell out on a new rig (plus, due to aforementioned global chip shortage, some component prices are still ridiculously marked-up). If I didn't have the PC issues I wouldn't be using it as much and I probably would've played a couple of the games on PC, but even then I'm probably using the PS5 a lot more than I did the PS4 during it's early years.

(Also it came out in Late 2020, that's not even 2 years ago yet?)

I stopped with Console less Nintendo Switch ever since I stumbled upon my first emulator. It is like puberty meets porn.

I think the only game I would want to play is lego skywalker saga, but I picked it up on ps4 so it doesn't really matter now.

Well, you partially already said it yourself, pandemic hit game release schedules hard.

Beyond that though, it's only been around for 1 and a half years (certainly nowhere near 4 years ) and in that time has done admirably despite covid. Yeah Miles Morales, Forbidden West and (later this year) God of War: Ragnarok are also still on PS4, but they're a heck of a lot more appealing on PS5.

For actual exclusives there's been Demon Souls, Returnal and Ratchet & Clank (and Astro's Playroom if you want to count that), which honestly beats the PS4 exclusives until Bloodborne came around (which was 1 and a half years in the PS4's lifetime, so that's where PS5 is at currently).

I'll grant you that the PS5 doesn't have its Bloodborne yet (since Demon Souls was just a remake), but then if it wasn't for delays, Forspoken would've been out already (and i know it will almost surely not be "as good" as Bloodborne, or hit that modern-cult-classic status, but it is up there in terms of being high profile). Then once we hit 2023 (edit: typo'd as 2024 initially ), they'll drop PS4 support and start focusing on pure PS5 exclusives, which given the short supply of PS5s, honestly a 2 year cross-gen grace period is something I can appreciate.

tldr; for now just the fact that it's technically way better than a PS4, but that's not much different from past generations this "early" in the gen, and that'll swiftly change in the next year.

I actually almost asked about that "4 years in" thing but I pay so little attention to consoles and time is so distorted these days that I thought maybe I was just wrong.

Lol, I'm honestly not sure where the ''four years'' thing came either.

I remember 2019 being significant. Was that the announcement? Or maybe they were supposed to launch and got pushed back? Maybe that's what you're thinking of. It's amusing though. But yeah. 2 years of nothing is still kind of a shame. Only thing that interests me so far is the Demon's Souls remake. Other than that I just have to wait. The next Plague Tale game is going to be next gen and I have to have that. The first one was just too good for a cinematic walking simulator with mild combat

I have a PS5 only because I want to play FF games on release, but there are some other games that I'm looking forward to as well so we'll see how it all goes.

I'll get one eventually. I am quite slow with video games, I am mostly playing older ones on older consoles. I don't mean retro or anything, but rather I bought a PS4 only in 2019/2020 to play Red Dead 2. This is a habit from when I couldn't afford anything, even though I can now.

I am not particularly keen to get a PS5 but it will happen eventually. I also need to upgrade my TV which is kinda delaying it too, I'm just lazy with tech.
