Default Petition to disallow "things that people do that piss you off" threads

So far as I've seen, they always always always end up in people flaming each other. I don't see the use in that.

    Is anyone else with me?

    Peace

I agree, or at least pay special attention to them to close it as soon as it becomes flaming.

Yes, those thread seriously piss me off!![/bad joke]

Seriously though I think that there isn't really enough of a flamming problem at EoFF to merit a ban on them, they can surely be treated as individual threads when one arrises instead of a blanket ban.

In saying that I don't post in them cos I do acctually find them annoying.

Well, I agree. First, I don't particularly like those threads which have a hostile feeling to them, and usually it ends up with flaming.

Sure, there's the freedom of speech, but we should all be aware that there are limits to this, you can say whatever, but just as long as it doesn't cause any troubles with another member. I guess we will do something about it.

Apparently, I have been declared banished.

    Yay?

Thanks, Proto. On one hand, I can see it feels good to vent in those threads sometimes, but you might as well do it privately, especially since they usually do end up causing fighting. People never ever ever seem to listen to each other well or employ reason in those threads either.

    I won't miss 'em.

No, there is nothing wrong with those threads. The problem isn't the nature of the thread. The problem is that some people need to change their attitudes. The same kind of mindless bickering that occurred in that thread has occurred in tons of threads here, and I've yelled at people many times for it. Nothing says that "Things that make me mad" threads need to involve people posting about other people at the MB. In fact people should NOT be doing that. A rule outlawing "Things that make me mad threads" is superceded by a rule we already have here and have always had, namely, "STOP FLAMING EACH OTHER IN ANY THREAD, PERIOD".

I should've closed that thread before it got that bad. My fault for not keeping up with it. But people shouldn't be acting like idiots either.

EDIT: Not saying anyone IS an idiot, I'm saying people are acting like them.

It's funny that I spoke up against an occurrence of what I felt was flaming and proceeded to ignite a flame war. Pretty much every time I tell people to calm down they flame me in those threads. That bothers me. I reported one of the offending posts and it took twelve hours before a mod came to that thread - heck, I had to directly inform one via Instant Messenger. Never mind the fact that the argument was long gone by the time any moderator was even connected to the Internet, since I decided it wasn't worth trying to respond to the comments anymore and left.

I don't know, it's just the nature of them that really, really irks me. Pretty much always one user winds up taking the heat. At least. It happened in this thread, which is also the second most recent occurrence of such a thread - I admit I'd not said some particularly great things there, either, but I sure as hell didn't think I deserved what LOCKE 54 posted against me there, or what Ferenan said against me last night. I don't think anyone deserves that. It sure as hell has muddled my head to have so much crap go on last night.

That said, I also find it hard to imagine how PC Fascist could possibly be expected to drop his confrontational attitude when every non-Staff post that mentions him seems to be a flame.

It's the man, not the machine.

If you feel that a thread is becoming personal, then don't post until you're relaxed about it again. If you feel you are being personally attacked, then contact staff.

If people around here just contacted staff members more often, the things you point out as being 'bad' etc. would be taken care of much more efficiently.

I say let them be. As long as people don't start flaming each other, it's okay, right? And let's face it, it's the *people* who do the flaming.

Perhaps they are worth monitering a little closer, though.

TM: You can always ignore someone posting like that, you know. Ferenan's not an ignorant newbie, he knows how things around here work. He even said he didn't care if he got banned, as long as he could voice his opinion. In other words...ignore it, and leave the modding to the mods. You telling Ferenan 'You shouldn't post like that' will hardly stop him. The mods'll do what has to be done, if they have to.

People don't like to be told how to live or act, even if it's right. That's just how it is. If I was walking around on the street or at school and some guy that I considered my peer and not my superior told me "Hey buddy, why don't ya lay off the hamburgers and loose a few pounds? You'll live longer." I would hate that guy intensely even though he's right. It's just a craphead thing to do.

If that behavior would stop, I'm willing to bet a lot of the problem would be gone right there.

I don't see why you didn't just do that in the first place.

And if there's a problem with people flaming after you tell them what's what, then quit doing it. The "flaming" would have stopped in that last thread if you wouldn't have said anything.

Those threads are almost my favorite kinds. Take them from me and I will be very upset.

    None were online.

I suppose you're right, but it still bothered me.

It's hard to expect people not to respond to you when you're lecturing (for lack of a better word) them and responding to them, especially if you tell them not to.

Besides, PC likes the attention. *rants about teenybopper vegan anti-punk punks for some reason*

You can't just go around telling people that they are not allowed to write certain things. There really is nothing wrong with those kind of topics, its when people start attacking each other that it gets out of hand. If you need to contact an admin about it, then do so. Just don't feed the other person more words that they can use for more insults.
