An easier solution would've been to forbid people from changing their names.

Please, dont forbid name-changing, I have been thinking about changing my lame Screename for a long time.
Anyway, I do think it should be higher in the profile, and maybe visible somewhere under your avatar (not in your profile)

That prevents somebody registering tomorrow and putting "RSL, Sean, Dr Unne" in his "formerly" field. Putting it in the admins' control keeps it accurate and cuts down on unbearably lame "jokes" and all-out hoaxes.
You could have explained that a lot sooner. In my case I'd like to have "Aaron, Citizen Bleys, Kilgore Trout, and a billion variants of The Man" put into my Formerly Known As field, since it's the truth.
I only became aware that the question was asked yesterday, or I would have explained it sooner.
As I recall, it was part of the suggestin that the admins be the ones to change it.
