I don't think you'll find a very decent download manager free. But try Download Accelerator Plus, it's the best DM and with the trial version, I think the only limitation is one ad on each screen. Nothing big, just a banner on the main window, and a banner on the download window.
Opera/MozillaThey both let you resume downloads etc.
That's what I use. I used to use DAP, and it was A-OK.
