OK, not purely luck but if he had decided to use Pain on me in the battle in which I beat him, I don't think I would have beaten him.

What is wrong with a hard game to beat? Nothing. What is wrong with a hard Final Fantasy to beat? Because it involves levelling up. A lot. And as most people will probably agree, levelling up is tedious to the point of the game not being fun anymore - if you need to spend 3-5 hours doing it...
