Kefka is just as accurate as Cefca. There's absolutely no distinction between a hard C and a K in Japanese, because after all, it's Japanese.

I also like how you kids are saying things like "everyone should leave Ted alone," when every post in this thread has supported him. It's not like anyone's sending him death threats in the mail or anything. This issue's not a big deal one way or another.

If Kishi Means by "hard And Soft Cs" that a "C" Usaly sounds like "K" but with an "E" or "I" it becomes more like "S" I think he has the point if woosly had left it as "Cefka" us England would know him as "Sefka" which just doesn't sound right!

Translating is more of art than a science. A lot of Japanese words do not have a one-to-one match with an English word. For example, 'baka' can be read as 'jerk', 'idiot' or both, depending on the context.

Also in Japanese there are levels of politeness built into the language. That would be hard to translate. But my guess is that a character like Locke would be speaking a much lower level of politeness than a character like Celes.

And speaking in a rude way can often be more shoking than swearing in Japanese. Only a cretin would call their mother 'ka' without any honorifics, instead of the more formal 'okansan' or 'okasama'.

I think what would help future translation efforts is more contact between the design team and the translation team. It would probably clear up a lot of misunderstandings.

Great. My most awesome visual/verbal pun has just been completely cheapened. I'm so happy.
