I just got this e-mail and man do I feel spoled now:
Hello FINAL FANTASY XI beta tester,
The FINAL FANTASY XI beta test will officially end on Tuesday
October 14, 2003 at midnight. We sincerely hope you have enjoyed
being a part of this beta test. To thank you we are going to send you
the retail version of FINAL FANTASY XI and an HDD with additional
gaming content when you return the beta HDD you are currently using.
In order to receive the retail version of FINAL FANTASY XI and the HDD
prior to or on the release date of the game, we require that you return
the beta HDD by OCTOBER 28, 2003. Please note that we are aiming to
ship items one week prior to FINAL FANTASY XI's release date.
Information related to shipping or tracking of items will not be
available until then.
REMOVING THE HDD FROM THE PLAYSTATION(R) 2 CONSOLE
1. Exit the FINAL FANTASY XI and PlayOnline software and make sure that
the @ (standby) indicator on the PlayStation(R)2 console front is lit up
in red, then turn off the PlayStation 2 console using the MAIN POWER
switch on the console rear.
2. Disconnect the power plug for the PlayStation 2 console from the
electrical outlet.
3. Loosen the mounting screws of the network adaptor.
* Turn the mounting screws in a counterclockwise direction using a coin.
* NOTE: Do not use a screwdriver to loosen the mounting screws.
4. Remove the network adaptor from the console and HDD.
* Remove the network adaptor by pulling it away from the console. Note
that the HDD remains in the console.
5. Remove the HDD from the console. (To remove the HDD you will need
to temporarily reattach the network adaptor.)
* Press in the two UNLOCK tabs of the HDD to release it from the
PlayStation 2 console.
* Fully insert the HDD power and data connectors of the network adaptor
into the matching connectors of the HDD. Be sure to insert the
connectors straight into each other to avoid bending the pins.
* Remove the network adaptor along with the connected HDD by pulling it
out of the EXPANSION BAY.
6. Cover the EXPANSION BAY.
* After removing the HDD, reattach the network adaptor OR reattach the
expansion bay cover to help protect the expansion bus connector, which
is located within the expansion bay.
RETURNING THE HDD
1. Repack the HDD in the provided Styrofoam packaging and HDD box and
place the container inside the larger Beta Test Kit box.
* Be sure to remove the return-mailing label from the original.
2. Seal the Beta Test Kit box with packing tape.
3. Affix the return-mailing label that came with the Beta Test Kit so it
covers the original shipping label.
4. U.S. Residents: Drop off the box at your local UPS office.
Canadian Residents: Drop off the box at your local Purolator depot.

Wow, so that means that you can get the game and start playing before the official release happens? Better start earning gil to get those world passes...

I guess I'll see. All it says it it'll be shipped a week prior to the release of retail... doesn't day f its the PS2 retail or PC retail... knowing Sony it'll be PS@ and I won't get it until a week after PS2 retail is released because I live in Canada and it took an extra week to get it shipped here
Oh well, free game and HDD... I'm not complaining
Well if you were beta testing it for the PS2 I'd assume their sending you the retail version for that. Apparently Square has been prepared for this for a while, with all the servers being ready and what not. We've all heard that the only reason Square isn't shipping the PS2 version yet is because Sony is giving them hell over the HDD. And given that the PS2 and PC play on the same servers, I wouldn't see why anyone with the game, an HDD, and an internet connection couldn't log on right now and play.
In retrospect if I had thought about it enough I would have purchased the game in Japanese and played it in America. Then as soon as the U.S. verison shipped I'd install that version so I could understand what the NPC's were saying. The community factor would suck given my lack of fluency in Japanese but at least I would be playing it...

It's hard to believe that FFXI is coming out this month. I need to hurry up and get a new computer. I probably won't get to play until Christmas though. You know they took so long to release the game, I'm not even that excited about it anymore.
Guess what?! Zaphier is back again! Ah yes, now I can laugh at all the newbs again when I just pop out of nowhere and reclaim my high position of authority over all, 'cept like GL an' Alpha and... wait, Taerdin is gone... damn it, Master.

Hey everyone, glad to see that WLA has still survived all this time even though it has been a long wait for the release of FFXI. Just letting you all know I'm still around and I will be very active once I get my copy of the game.

Anyways Is DRK/Samurai OR Samurai/DRK A Good Mix.
not sure about DRK/SAM... I'm sure it would work ok though. I can't believe that Beta ends in 8 days... I'm so sad. I hope I don't have to wait for PS2 release to play... stupid sony and not wanting to release the HDD...
I like my classic combination of Black Mage/Thief. Well, maybe not classic, but it'll work until I work up the nerve to become a... Summoner. And that's right, all you bi-zatches will have to be my guardians when we go to kill the summons so I can... summon... them... *dodgy eyes*
