Well, being that my party usually consists of Shadow, Setzer, Cyan and Gogo, I have Setzer or Shadow at front.
... unless of course I've used Mr. Game Shark. Then it's Keffy-sama all the way! Nothing more entertaining than seeing townspeople calmly talking to the man responsible for the destruction of the world.
Also, I wish to add that this feature is one of those things I loved about FFVI; you got to get rid of the annoying/boring main characters in favor of the more interesting ones. I tells ya, I'd LOVE to see this feature in another FF game, or at least in the capacity Chrono Cross used it.
I always had either Terra or Celes in the lead, usually Terra though. She's just too cute. I wish I could have had her walking around in her Esper form though.

Terra was great. I loved watching her from behind, 'cuz her ponytail would sway and it looked SO COOL!
But still, after playing through the parts of the game where you HAVE to use her, I opted for other folks.
mog gogo or umaro. they're so cool.
My favorite icon to use is the ghost icon you get if you get ghosts on the train. It's especially funny watching ghosts chasing your ghost and seeing your ghost freak out!

Mog is cool to have lead. Any non-human or questionable-identity-human (Adlai) is pretty cool to have running around. Nothing cooler than having a sasquatch or a moogle ask for directions. Edgar is also useful to have in the lead whenever I'm at Figaro Castle, so I can get discounts.
