The song entitled "Ami" is a variation of the Balamb GARDEN theme. I don't think Ami is meant to be a person. In fact, I just assumed it was the French word for "friend." One of the places where the track plays is when Selphie visits Trabia Garden, and in other instances where friendship is important or emphasized, so I think it is referencing that. Just a thought.
I've heard that Ami is Selphie's name in the Japanese version. Don't know for sure, though.
