I say start with FF1 and go to 2.

And yeah, you have to give them names yourself. As for them all being male, there's some debate as to whether or not white mage is male or not. I guess it's up to you to figure it out.

If it'll help you in your decision in which game to play, FFI has class selection and you gain levels like most rpg's. FFII has an ability level up system, where certain abilities get stronger and their counterparts get weaker(strength <-> intelligence) as you use them in battle.
