I don't think anyone ever said that he actually commits suicide. It's just assumed. He could of jumped off and ran away to be alone.

The way I see things, it's not ever explicitly stated that he was going to commit suicide because it's supposed to be obvious. The whole "honorable self-destruction" angle is a perfect fit for the story of a tragic ninja who has killed all of his emotions and such, so I see it as implied for Shadow. Watching him crouch down in a corner and tell his best friend to get away from him and then not seeing him die is like watching a cowboy ride out of town at the end of a movie and then not seeing him ride into the sunset.
