Gilgamesh did give up, if I remember correctly. (SPOILER) X-death sent him to the N-zone, where you meet him later, and helps you fight Necrophobe.

I really could not stand Ultros. MWEE HEE HEE! That annoyed me to hell and back. Although his "Mmmm, seafood soup! Let me get my bib!" line was funny, as it was pure randomness.
I personally liked Seifer - anyone that goes around insulting Zell all day is more than worthy of my vote. And I liked the way that in later battles, his trenchcoat became ragged and torn.
Although saying that I don't like Gilgamesh is stupid, so I won't. He was pretty cool. As for Jenova, well she was just a personalityless thing, I mean she only said five words in the entire game ("Because you are a puppet"). And Seymour? Well, let's just say he is one of the few FF chars that annoyed me more than Ultros. Just what were they thinking when they employed the voice actor?
