The chocographs lead you to locations of chests, which mostly contain items and weapons, but every so often one "upgrades" your chocobo to the next level - Shallow Water, Mountain, Ocean, and Sky.
Dead Peppers begin to appear among the items you dig up during chocobo hot and cold after your chocobo gets its moutain upgrade.
