There's no character development, If that's what you mean. Your characters don't even talk during the game. However, there is a plot, and although it's nowhere near as complex as the plots of later FF's, it suits the feel of the game quite well.
If you want a game with an expansive plot, FF1 isn't what you're looking for. But play it anyway. It rules in every other respect.

It's like Dungeons & Dragons in video game format. That's how those old RPGs were made. If you look at Final Fantasy I compared with II, you'll see they really tried hard to give II a definiet story. Still wasn't that good, but back in the 8-bit era, I'm sure it was really something.
