It takes a bunch, like 50 pieces or so. I usually just keep wandering to the various chests and getting coral until I have 50 peices, then it lets me pass.
But I can give it some pieces and then go get some more and give them as well untill he has eaten 50 in total, right?

I think so but I'm not 100% sure. Have you tried www.gamefaqs.com? I'm sure that there are a few FAQs that have all of the specifics on this scenario there.
