...Anyway, about the other main characters... I doubt they're dead. Sure, Cloud's all alone, but then he went through countless traumatic experiences, got used for experiements and drugged for years, lost his family and friends, killed hundreds of people, then finally settled the score and saved the world. A bit too much pressure there, I think. It'd be enough to mess anyone up and turn them a bit antisocial.
Spoilers ahead. Surely if anyone's read this far, they've already finished FF7 though!
Somewhere (can't remember where right now) I read that the 'shiny' sword you see is a new one that Cloud attains in the new movie. But don't forget, if the game is anything to go by, Cloud is *still* (somehow) carrying the original Buster Sword he started with. (You could never sell it, it made the 'neh-uh' noise)
I'm pretty sure that the 'tatty' sword is the Buster Sword, which we already know Cloud "inherited" from Zack when he was shot and taken to Midgar with him.
Shortly after that you pick up the storyline through the start of the game, were he's still using the same sword.
Remember you couldn't sell it.
In the 'tatty' scene, I think Cloud is finally returning the Buster Sword (now rather old) to the place it belongs - Zack's place of death. Note the surroundings, i.e. the mini 'cliff' - looks familiar from the Shinra Mansion flashback, don't you think? Or is it just me?
A sword sticking out of the ground symbolises its weilder's death in Japanese culture (or so I heard, don't take that as gospel) so this would make sense. He's paying respect to his best friend, a man he'd even ended up trying to imitate. Thoughts in his mind: had he never tried to imitate him, perhaps Sephiroth wouldn't have been able to exploit his schizophrenia and attain the Black Materia required to summon Meteor.
This would also (IMO) explain the 'I can't forgive myself; I want to be forgiven" line in its various translations. He's probably talking about immitating Zack and how it confused him enough to give Sephiroth the Black Materia and help facilitate the death of mankind. He wants to be forgiven by the Planet and its dying people for the terrible (and arguably Jenova-induced) mistake, but can't even forgive himself.
If we wana make such a big deal outta not being able to sell Cloud's sword cause it has sentimental value to him, then Barrett would have an attachment to his Gatling gun and Tifa to her uhhhh, whatever they were calleds... I really odn't think that had anything to do with not being able to sell the weapon. And I still despise this dang movie idea. Sephiroth witout awesome eyes or super-bangs and Cloud's hair non-spike-a-fied??? Say it isn't so!!! And the Buster Sword looks paper-thin!!!!!

yeah, I downloaded the movie, and saved it, and in some scenes clouds hair looked very..short. Hopefully that will be fiixed or I'll accept it.
I never thought of Cloud having Schizophrenia...sorta adds to Cloud. hehe.

Sephiroth never had glowing eyes, they're just an odd shade of bright green, and they still are in the Advent Children screenshots. The Buster Sword still looks pretty huge to me. If it is any thinner, then that's just a concession for the sake of realism - his weapon would weigh roughly 90 pounds if it was as big as it is in the game, and that's pretty dang huge. Cloud's hair, too, is still quite spikey, just not 'solid' like it was in the game. Fear not.
What about all the times they mention that Sephiroth's/Cloud's eyes have "A Strange Glow"......

They have the strange glow because of the injected Jenova cells.

Actually, at least in Cloud's case, it's from exposure to Mako energy. As for it being a "glow", the colour is also described as a "glare", or simply bright. From the FMVs and in-game images, you can tell that their eyes aren't actually luminous.
