In the main site it says some stuff about familiars, but what were they originally for?

It looks like it was scrapped from the game. Perhaps this is how Mog developed(protecting Eiko). If you're looking for an answer from site staff in general as to why the page is there and such, you should probably have started this thread in the Feedback forum.

After the Amano paintings of the main cast were released, but before the actual game was, some dumb kids presumed that the creatures accompanying the characters had some storyline significance. But, the fact is that they're just an example of the pretty but meaningless things Amano likes to include in his work. They're parsley.
