ok im wasnt gonna list this as a spoiler since it happens within 3 hours of the beginning of the game, but o well. Aeris mentions to cloud that (SPOILER) she had a boyfriend who was in soldier that was first class. i thought it might have been zack, but thats just my opinion. who did u all think it was?

I'm almost positive it was Zack. Not only because Cloud, who (SPOILER)has assumed Zack identity almost entirely and reminds Aeris of her ex, but when you meet Zack's parents, they more or less confirm it.

The narrative makes it painfully clear that Aeris's boyfriend was indeed Zack.

Yeah. It's one of those 'all but comes out and says it' deals, like in VIII with the indentity of Squall's papa.

Ok, Aeris says herself that Zack was her boyfriend, she says it in Gongaga Village. I had Cloud, Tifa, and Aeris in my party and when i went to talk to Zack's parents they both ran out of the room shocked. talk to Aeris and she says Zack was her boyfriend. Next time u play the game again, try this out.

There is a scene when you go to the Shinra Manshion's laboratory. It shows more of Cloud's past including Zack's.

Yeah, Aeris was talking about Zack. Here's the lines she says in Gongaga.

AERIS: "What a shock... I didn't know Zack was from this town."
CLOUD: "You know him?"
AERIS: "Didn't I tell you? He was my first love."
CLOUD: "..."
AERIS: "Zack... SOLDIER First Class. Same as Cloud."

Aeris's bf WAS Zack until his untimely death when Sephiroth killed him.
