I'd never say FF6 is the best game ever, and I'll never say FF6 is the best RPG ever, but it's easily one of the best console-RPGs ever. The difference? Infinity-engine and its offspring. Console-RPGs tend not to be 'pure' RPGs - you don't get pick dialogue-options which actually have an effect on the conversation, subquest, possibly/unlikely the outcome of the game.
