    Default Mouse Trouble

Okay, a few months ago (perhaps longer than six), I purchased a new mouse because my old one up and quit on me. The new one is optical, and until last week has never given me any problems.

But lately, the mouse has just been freezing. Not the whole computer, just the mouse. Everything else; keyboard, programs, etc, works fine. I have to restart the computer to fix things.

Now, it's not coming unplugged, because it will freeze while I'm not moving it, and that red light never goes off. I tried re-uh...fixing? the port, but that didnt help any. Anyone know what the heck is wrong and how to fix it?

Test the mouse on another PC, and try testing a different mouse on your PC - should give an initial indication of which one is likely the cause of acting up

Is it a USB mouse? I don't know much about them, but I've heard that they can be quite tricky to use. Did you get any drivers with the mouse? If so, I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling them, just to make sure. If that still doesn't work, then you should just take it back and get a refund (or buy a standard mouse).

Strange. You're running XPee, right? XPee recognizes most optical USB mice and has generic drivers for it that should work for pretty much any mouse. It does sound like a driver issue in this case...Maybe you should try uninstalling the drivers, shutting the machine down, unplugging the mouse, and then rebooting. Once Windows comes back up, plug the mouse back in and let Auto-Detect do its thing.

It could also be that the mouse is physically damaged (Someone got mad at it and chucked it across the room?)

Thanks guys, I'll try what you suggested. Unfortunatly I cant test it just yet, as mine is the only PC in the house. And Bleys, I'm running ME, unfortunatly. Heh. I will do what you suggested though, quite soon actually because it's acting up today and has already made me restart 3 times. Blah.

My guess is that it's Windows ME. xP

I know. ;_; But there's not much I can do about that. I don't think my comp could handle XP.

Yeah, that's too bad... oh well, at least it's only the mouse that's the problem, did you get it fixed yet? XP isn't all it seems to be anyways, may as well run Win2k.

Not really, I havent figured it out. But it seems to have calmed down, so I'm okay.

    Thanks, though.

XPee will run on a Pentium MMX 233, which is pretty bloody old

Microsoft reccomends 128 MB of RAM (And I second that reccomendation), but I've installed it on a workstation with 64 MB.

Nevertheless, unless you are running Windows ME with the minimum system requirements (32 MB), you'll probably see a marked improvement by switching to Windows 2000 Professional; Microsoft reccomends 64 MB for Pro, and I've installed it on a 32 MB workstation.

XP will run with 64MB, but it will probably be almost too slow to handle. At least it was on my sister's computer, she has a PIII 600. Even a really slow XP is probably better than ME though.
