Problems with a CD Key

As you may know I had some computer problems causing me to delete my main partition of my HD which I had HalfLife installed on, I recently had to reinstall it but heres the thing, I lost the piece of paper which I wrote the CD Key of the game which I purchased. I had to use a key I found in a generator so I can play the single player game on it but I wonder, is it possible for me to play Half Life online with the generator key?

If you really bought HL, the key is in/on the box/CD. Or there is a way to get it from either.

I threw out the box and wrote the key on a sepeate piece of paper, I don't keep my boxes. The key was not written o the disc either.

It should be written on the CD case. You can probably call Valve or email them if you registered with them, and they will email you your CD key.
