I was at level 70 and I walked all over them. You can enter the holes and stuff but at level 40? You might want to get to level 50 or so, some fiends are rotten. Plus you have to fight (SPOILER) Shiva, The Magus Sisters and Anima before the Boss Fight and I don;t know if you remember them from X but they could be tough. The area after you have the consecutive boss fights is a good place to level up and there's a save point right there.

I was only at level 35 with all 3 characters and (SPOILER) I kicked Shiva's ass But I didnt go any further yet.

And where do you think the best (and easiest) place to level up is?
well right now i am in chapter 5, but im finishing up the few more sidequests i can do before going into the holes. i think my people are on levels 83,83, and 85. that should be good enuff levels right?
for leveling up purposes, this is what i did. i put everyone on the lady luck dressphere (i dont really care about them learning other abilities right now, i have enuff to win i think). then i had them all learn double exp. i went to mt. gagazet and starting kicking some major fiends! its really easy. i got high levels super fast its great.
Ah, I see. And where do you suppose I get this Dress sphere????????/^_^

u get lady luck by winning the sphere break tournament in luca. you gotta beat shinra or he'll keep the dres phere for himself.

You can go back and challenge him anytime after the tournament but its harder
