Tidus and Vaan both have sunny, cheerful, sweet boyish faces, and dress almost exactly alike. I think Squall looks more like Cloud, solemn, stoic, made-out-of-marble, almost washed-out. They're all prettyboys, sure, but I don't expect that trend to let up in Japan anytime soon.

There is a HUGE difference in the way the characters in FFVII were designed as opposed to the ones in FFVIII. FFVIII's stuff looks way to much like FFX's. Does Vaan look like Tidus? I can see the cheerfulness. But anything else I just can't see.

Not really, FF VII and VIII both use the same kind of texture mapping and character blocks. Only one was made (or tried to be made depending on your opinion) more visually attractive. However, when they move to the PS2 they got rid of character blocks and moved into 'real time' characters which gave them less work to make one character (as they just made a model rather then having to do each bit of the characters design as they went along) and also gave the characters a more fluid movement around the screen.
