I think that the second verse may be referring to the reunion, so...

The blood of the planet, (mako energy)
That runs over mountains, (northern crater)
It has halitosis, (bad breath could be referring to the fact that a good enough dose of mako energy can kill you)
But it can do enough spells to make up for it. (but it's redeeming side is that it makes materia)

dunno how to link it to Red though...

Linking Red to Materia makes me think of Bugenhagen's observatory in Cosmo Canyon, where he shows you the master materia...... *boggles*

Ah! Hojo as a Madman was my next guess, but I didn't even consider Red XIII - I was thinking his Bad Rap or his HO512, but Red XIII makes so much more sense - he's red, after all.

So, here we go again. I was trying to crack this while watching Seinfeld - in other words, I probably failed.

The blood of the planet, (Lifestream)
That runs over mountains, (Green or Black Chocobo, or it refers to line 1)
It has halitosis, (HO512 does a breath attack)
But it can do enough spells to make up for it. (It also casts some stuff, I guess)

Each stands alone not with the rest, (the lines of the original riddle refer to separate things)
Finding the link is what I test. (find the commonality behind them)
A madman named an unlucky beast, (Hojo naming Red XIII)
And aptly so to say the least. (Red XIII is red)

Now I'm having trouble with fitting in lines 1/2 with the others...
- Lifestream
- HO512
- Red XIII

Then again, Red XIII is to be used as a clue to what lines 1-4 should represent, and is not part of the riddle itself...

Hell, maybe the link is Red XIII. The Lifestream embodies itself in materia that Red uses, and he and HO512 were Hojo specimens. So I'll give that as an answer.

Hehe, you're doing well, PoD has a lot of the riddle cracked, he's just ignoring his own solution and the possibly the most important thing I've said. You keep taking lines 3 and 4 together even though you know they shouldn't be, and you keep using the second part in your answer.

Okay I'll give another clue, the last line of the second part is possibly the most important. Also remember I was cruel when I just posted the first part .

Does the answer have anything at all to do with Red? Or Hojo? 'Cause it could be another beast that he names, maybe that you can find in those places? Or maybe it has something to do with Vincent? He can turn into a beast, and he was involved with the shinra??? I'll say him as a guess...........

That runs over mountains, (Places where the lifestream shows, or chocobos that can run over mountains? But if this line is separate from the first, then maybe it has nothing to do with the Lifestream.... Could it be a river?)
It has halitosis, (Monsters that can cast Breath, or a place with a hostile atmosphere?)
But it can do enough spells to make up for it. (It's difficult to see how this line could be separate form the one before, as it says that it makes up for having haltosis.......)

Let me get this straight.......The first verse is the actual riddle. So you could work out the answer just by looking at that. The second verse is JUST a guide, to get you on the right lines? How? How will the answer to the last two lines help you out with the answer to the first verse???
What I think has been worked out is:
-Each line of the first verse should be interpreted separately from the others
-When you come up with an answer for each line, you have to find the link beetwen the four items/people/places

But I don't get how the last two lines come into it..... are they together, not separate?

You've understood how to solve the riddle, but you aren't getting the details right. Okay I'll say that for the second part take lines one and two together (As has been done), and three and four together (As has been done), but bear in mind the fourth line isn't just written to add another line.

Well, I just can't bend my mind enough to separate lines 3/4, or whenever I do, I can't think of the instances that you refer to.

I'm going to guess that Lines 3/4 of part 2 refer to line 4 of part 1. That would place Red XIII in the answer to part 1, which as we have seen has gotten me nowhere. I believe Hojo also named Lost Number in the Nibelheim mansion, so let's stick him in there and see where it goes.

Lifestream - the blood of the planet
Green/Black Chocobo - can climb over mountains
Dorky Face - the monster in the Mansion that does a Funny Breath attack, or any Breath-doing monster
Lost Number - can do a fair amount of spells

Red XIII can be used as a clue because his L4 limit is obtained once you defeat Lost Number, and Hojo is involved with both Red XIII and Lost Number.
