Cloud has got to be the main character because the whole game is based around his adventures. He's practically always on the screen and is constantly envolved in the storyline.
I'm guessing that this is something that no one is thinking about, he said that it was a trick question didn't he? I think that it is Cloud..... But then, why did he say "what is the main character, almost like the character he is talking about is an inanimate object.
Sephiroth is the villan, antagonist, bad guy, he can not be the main character......
