-Dogs are more loyal to humans
-Dogs won't attack you if you bother them. (assuming they know you/are their master)
-Dogs do what you tell them too if your trained
-Protection

So, I'd say getting a dog is a pretty smart move if you know how to train him/her. Also, every dog your parents ever owned isn't every dog in the world. You really can't go by that.
