spontaneous generation.
haven't they always been there?
Rivers that used to exist before some natural shifting of rockbed etc closed them off, followed by continuous breeding by the fish through the generations?
A lot of lakes in the US are stocked, that is, people breed the fish and release them into the lake for gaming and tourism purposes. So Yams actually was on the right track.

Either that, or God did it. Depends on what you believe.
Underwater rivers exist. There's a huge network of underwater channels connecting from the sea to Lake Pupuke, which is in Takapuna, Auckland, New Zealand.
They also have yet to accurately measure the depth of that lake, because there are so many deep trenches running throughout the lakebed.
There are plenty of fish in Lake Pupuke.
Um, surely you both mean "underground" rivers?
An "underwater" river is just a current.
Yes. I mean exactly that. Underground rivers.
..Lake Pupuke still has them! >_<
Mainly from the water sources, but mostly for the same reason why fish are in oceans... they're just there. DON"T QUESTON NATURE!
