I think he was the failed muppet of a Black Mage by Jim Henson who abadoned him, because Vivi just couldn't catch on with all the fans of the original muppets, not to mention he was occasionally not getitng along with other charcters of the show with his occasional blasts of fire burning them in a vain attempt to get ahead in the show.

Geez, I thought they explained this in the game. Kermit and Yoda teamed up to beat the crap out of Vivi, because Vivi flirted with Miss Piggie. Thus, Vivi ran from them, and left Jim Henson Studios. He journeyed for awhile, and then finally took the Yellow Submarine to FFIX land. Duh. They told you this after you went on [pointless sidequest #1]

I think Vivi is a black mage, vertically challenged, with a major case of confusion. He's quite good in battle though, despite being timid. Which raises the question, if Vivi is so scared of things, how can he force himself to stand and fight when facedf with something like Ozma? He couldn't even handle a Prison Cage!

Vivi's a form of contructed life. He's alive, as much as anyone else, but he was produced from Mist (the essence of souls, like the Lifestream or Pyreflies) by Kuja. (SPOILER)Zidane, too, was made artificially; however, he's still a living, breathing, sentient being. Life is life, whether it's made in vitro or in vivo.
