Gaia is the Mother Earth of greek mythology, while Terra is latin for earth, and possibly the roman eqvuivalent to Gaia. Basic stuff, really. Can't remember on Terra, really.
What you DON'T hear about is Cronos, who got castrated and whose... Bits where thrown into the stars by his own offspring.
Terra is latin for, literally, "earth" or "ground." As in terra firma, or "solid ground."

Our name for our planet - Earth - is pretty generic when you think about it as compared to other planets named after gods and goddesses, so it makes sense that the Earth has many names historically - just as different cultures have different names for the concept of "earth," they had different names for the planet "Earth."
As Nait said, Gaia was the Greek goddess of the Earth - she was created from Chaos and was subsequently the mother of all the other gods.
As for Terra, the actual scientific name for our own planet is Terra, which is why so many science fiction shows refer to our solar system as the "Terran System."
I think FF9 was just using, as most FFs do, ancient mythology as the basis for its naming of the worlds. Both planets are named after synomyns for our own. Those clever kids.
Actually, isn't Gaia mother of the Heavens, not Earth?

I think the Greek name for Uranus was Ouranus. Chronos was the Greek name for what the Romans called Saturn. Chronos was one of the Titans and the father of the more familiar gods like Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia (Vesta) and Hera (Juno).
Yes - Cronos was the son of Gaia and Ouranos, and he killed his father, just as Cronos' son, Zeus, later killed him.

For me it was an interest in classical mythology coupled with a early desire to be an astronomer.
And personally I think Chronos/Saturn had it coming. Who wouldn't if they devoured their own children?
