FF CGI vs ANIMATION

i read n article on how this grand manga artist (who worked on evangelion/FFunlimited etc) thought that FF the spirits within sufferd because they tried to make it too human looking. indeed it's always been a quest for FF to become more realistic. but in FFX2 i got the distinct impretion of them veering towards animation..which was enjoyable. given the standard of many anime now....where FF could take it would be astonishing.

WHICH WOULD YOU PREFER -

further developments into realistic computer graphics

working with and towards an animated apporach

Well, Tactics and Tactics Advance had a nice anime impression. But, I suppose it could be taken a lot further. But there are a lot of people who can't distinguish between anime and a cartoon, and they might end not buying an anime style FF because they think it's for kids.

I'd like both, actually. I like the way Square does it now. Like Mo mentioned, Tactics and Tactics Advance had an anime style, whereas obvious X and X-2 looked more realistic. I like both, and I like that different games have different styles.

i think if they are the type of person to be dissuaded fom something because of the animation....they are almost unlikly to buy an FF anyway.

it doesnt effect me that almost EVERYTHING, from soaps to porn is animated/illustrated in japan....thats the japanese, im comfortable enough in being intelligant to see that the new Masters of the universe is aimed at adults and geroge shrinks is for kids. the fact the university tutors didnt have a clue is an indication of their inability to teach what they are paid for.

many people become obssesd with Akira simply because it's their first taste of adult orientated animation.....which is kinda sad when they should be able to watch transformers and still get fun out of it. animation is simply a tool for whatever you want to use it for.

i was dissapointed in FFX2 how skinny the girls were, they had no hips or shape whatsoever and this was only made worse by their attempts in CGI to render the girls realistically. sure it's down the to the inhernt nature of japanese girls.....but it looked just inhumanly aweful to me.

I like stylized things more. Now, I draw a THICK line between stylization and contrivance. When an artist has a STYLE that they always draw every last person in (a technique of drawing/not drawing things) it's an actual mark of that artist's style. However, using "anime eyes" on your FF fan art doesn't make you a mangaka. Yoshitaka Amano uses a very surrealistic style with soft lines and subtle colors..... except red..... for some reason he uses a really loud red. Anyway, this sets him apart because he uses distinct techniques. Generally, in Marvel comics you'll have superhoes who all have the exact same build as each other. HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE muscles does not = stylized. It's just your way of compensating for your feelings of inadequacy. The women in comics are even MORE uniform though, sometimes not even differing much in hairstyle. That's one thing I DO like about recent FFs, you could re-texture a character to be completely black all over and you could still tell who was who. Cloud is a scrawny white boy with a flock of seagulls haircut. Barret is very husky. Vincent is really tall. Tifa is a white girl with disproportionate bossoms. Yuffie has incredibly bad posture, etc. The only "problem" with making things more realistic is that they're not as stylized. The conceptual art pretty much goes right out the window since there's only so much variation from the theme you can do. But like all art, themes come and go. At one point there was a huge movement in painting to better capture the human figure. Then came Modern Art and we threw all that in the garbage so we could fling paint about on a canvas randomly. Not that I have anything against Jackson Pollock, I just don't really feel his art work. This is probably because I'm not viewing it in context. Now, I have a feeling that with CG art, we're going to reach a point of detail in emulating reality that will be AMAZING, but then we'll start to experiment more and see how STYLIZED we can make things. Cel-shading is just one example, but it's very basic and ubiquitous right now. Anyway, sorry for ranting, just wanted to get that off my chest.

your right that marvel women are almost carbon copys, but then most artists can only draw one or two faces and kinds of female. at least DC uses a varying form of female from the ultimatly powerful and rival to all wonderwoman to the sex kitten catwomen to the teenage supergirl.

while we admier and are attracted to style, it shouldnt distract from the whole project

i like anime and all but completly changing from cg to anime would be to much. i say skip x2 go to 10 and improve th cg from there,which is what it looks like from trailers of ff12

i think it would actually work easily. more and more, particuly in japanese animation cgi and computers are already used.....

X2 easily has the best CGI yet in a FF

actually the FMV in FFX2 is more advanced....most noticably in the way teh girls can pull faces smoother than in FFX and the camera work. if you watch the second concert in FFX2 you really see that they pushed the FMV harder and worked out what they could do in FF12

I like the style in KH, where it was not realistic looking, yet realistic at the same time. The characters looked great in the (2) CGIs they played in the game, but they weren't realistic looking. No person looks like Sora. But it's still cool looking.

So I'm at a happy medium. Though I'm not really a big anime fan.

Yes, I still like Animation. I'm a Transformers fan. But I like Beast Wars more, which is CGI.

i prefer beastwars and beastmanchines simply because the story, plot, characterisation and scripting is better than G1. Sure nothing can beat grimlock, prime and bumblebee......once you hear hounds vocal receptor you know what era your in....but Primal led his troops into the thick of it, and Dinobot is one of teh few people ive heard who can actually speak shakespear properply.
