The highest version blocks physical damage and returns it to the attacker.
KB: You never used it? I used it almost all the time, helps out in the Collesium.
Edit: Actually, to correct myself, the final version protects you, but also damages the enemies. So you could run around with it on and rub against the heartless to damage them.

I never used it either. I have a tendency to dislike defensive magic, and I generally ignore its existence.
It's probably one of the most useful spells in the game. Using it saves you a lot of headache, especially if, like me, your main strategy is to just rush in and start the killifying.
It's utter crap. It costs 2 MP to shield yourself when you can just Lock On and press Triangle so Donald and Goofy will attack. If you're a good player, then Aero is a waste of time. Especially in the Gold Match.
