Okay, Aeris, you're overlooking a LOT about FFII. First of all, FFII's battle system only punishes people who try to make all their characters godlike. You really don't need to do a lot of training if you're really selective about what sort of training you give. Anyone who uses both black and white magic will be a watered down mage. Anyone who uses black and white magic and attacks regularly will be simply pathetic. You don't need level 16 magic either. You'll do perfectly fine with magic at level 10.

As far as plot holes, there really aren't any. Leon became a "dark knight" because Square wanted to throw in a plot twist. "Oh CRIPES! I've been fighting my own brother!" is slightly more compelling than "I used to be this faceless evil knight but now I'm good!" Also, Ultima is a very powerful spell in FFII, but like any other, the damage it does at level 1 isn't that good later in the game. Spells are learned through mastery, meaning you're not superb with them right after you pick up the scroll. Is the world's sharpest sword still a terribly deadly weapon in the hands of a novice?

Another thing is that FFVIII's love story was really really abysmal. Squall doesn't care about Rinoa AT ALL and then all of a sudden he decides that he's emotionally dependant on her. It's not even a good teenage romance story. It's just dumb and forced. Granted, the Japanese version probably makes a lot more sense, but we're talking about US releases.

i,m not trying to become a god on my first play and it was just a pain in the ass. in the end only attack was any use cause the spells took ages to master. and what i mean by ultima is it was never essential to the plot 2 go all the way to mysidia and get ultima and yet the game forced me. and that tower was hell.

yes fair enough about leon but it still doesnt excuse the laziness in not explaining why he became a dark knight. with kain for example u find out he was brainwashed. not exactly original but sumthin as simple as 1 line in ff2 would have been enough 2 explain the plot hole.

If attacking wound up being your best command it's because you used it more. Try playing a game with a character who does nothing but cast fire. Soon you'll be wondering why your attacks are so weak. There's a LOT of weird little tweaks you can do in this game that don't get explained. For example, putting mages in the back row makes them about twice as effective and makes your fighters about twice as resiliant. The system in FFVIII has a massively steep learning curve, but once you get it, it requires no thought at all. Everything you do in battle in FFII has an effect on how that chatacter fights. The only thing that FFVIII has over FFII is that in FFVIII you can make your characters insanely cheap within 10 minutes of starting the game. In FFII you CAN'T make your characters cheap. However, you really don't need to. There aren't any bosses that are so tough that they require you to summon Eden and then do 2 limit breaks every turn. In fact, if you figure out the system, the game gets insanely easy. You'll find yourself wondering why the FAQs tell you to get so over levelled.

the thing i found most annoying was the bosses insane defense, i got sick of my ppl doing zero all the time. the last boss was a bitch for that. of course i hear the blood sword smites him, but having only 63 items i chucked them and other stuff which was annoying as hell.

i actually prefer magic but its so weak and so little mp it takes an age of training to get it doing anything of worth. when i,.m back on i,ll do another ffII rant.

I enjoyed playing VIII much more than I enjoyed playing II, and that's what matters to me.

lol in my ffII origins loads of enemys your attacks do 0 unless u get critical hits, this became really annoying from hill gigas onwards. to counter this u need high strength and good weapon skill. the two hardest bosses astiroth and final emperor were ******s for this cause coupled with drain touch it was a nightmare.

Eh, you don't really need ridiculously high strength though. Hill gigas are real pains, but if you survive 2 battles with them you'll be pretty much set. Hitting them with magic can really speed up the battles.

I got Guy to the highest Barefist level before even getting to Bafsk, and for the rest of the game, there weren't too many things he couldn't kill with one hit. If ever there were a flaw in the game's system, that would be it. Not that I complained.

I expected II to be... well... like it was.

i hated how to gain any real strength u needed to use that cheap lv up method. the biggest problem with that DJzen was i had no good magic because of the reasons above. to be knowledge no ff has such a riduclous defense systerm.
