I'm going to go watch the opening FMV again and see if I can see the empty cartridge falling out of the chamber.

I think this is a classic case of "people trying to read too much into one of the first FMVs created for the game before it was even completed"

    Seen that a lot recently

IMO, there was no burn mark because Square didn't think of it.

People in the world of Final Fantasy seem to have built up an immunity to the extra effects of fire, ice, water, lightning/thunder, etc...
I've used Fire, Fira (Fire2), and Firaga (Fire3) on many enemies, but none of them seem to get burned, just damaged . The scars on Squall and Seifer are the only permanent effects of Final Fantasy attacks that I know of right now .

Oh, and I thought yellow fire was the weakest, then orange, then red; all the way up to purple or something.

White's the hottest, and those r main characters, so of course they show battle damage, but like in normal fights, it wont show it on someone who'll die in like a few turns

magic fire blast maybe it's very hot and sure it feels like it's burning the flesh of your chest but in actual fact the pain the heat all of it is psychological it therefore makes sense that the "illusionary flames" dissapated with the embers on squalls clothes but Squall was never really going to be burnt by it. As for Seifer shooting early and scarring Squall I am going to say it is because of the intense rivalry between them ever since they were kids (although they really only remember the time after joining Garden but still they hated each other bitterly) therefore by actually moving to cut Squall he shows superiority yet Squall has never accepted the fact that Seifer may be superior or his equal in skill retaliates by giving Seifer the opposite direction scar as if to say "yeah you can take me down but remember I'm always going to get up to kick you in the ass" sorta thing.

Squall is wearing leather, so the flame may have just hit that. Also, has anyone noticed that Squall seems to miss Seifer when slashing at his face? I know he hits him, but why doesn't Seifer end up in the infirmary?

He probably did and just got out before Squall did. Either way, it's not that important.

He probably did, but Squall was the one who fell unconsious. So we never know how long after training Squall wakes up.

And I don't think Squall missed, that was probabaly just a wierd camera angle.

EDIT: Dammit... Zaphier beat me to it.

Seifer's injury may have been less severe, more superficial than Squall's. After all, Squall was already wounded when he struck back.
Seifer probably just got a couple of Curagas cast on himself then went along his merry way... whereas Squall's wound might've needed a combination of magic and physical treatment.
I'm pretty sure there was some curative magic involved, since both characters are unbandaged within hours of getting cut, and neither of their injuries re-opens during the stress of battle that same evening.

If you pay attention, you'll notice Seifer backs up before getting cut. As for Squall, he took it head on, didn't flinch or anything. Had a surprised look on his face, but he didn't flinch.

Yea but you dont get to see his full reaction either because as soon as squall scars seifer the next part of the fmv comes on...

I guess it would seem fitting after all Seifer for all the great warrior he is doesnt want to die. whereas the hero Squall seems to have the self preservation of a Lemming. Which is more prominent once Rinoa gets involved but it strikes me that his hatred for Seifer and resouloution not to back down would cause the same effects on him as Rinoa in space.
