Is it possible to remove the gray buttons on icons?

you've seen the shortcut bar right? well i'm just wonderin' the gray button so it looks like the icons in the quick launch.

Try a newer version of Office then (each new version seems to change it's UI slightly to look nicer than the previous and pretend it's actually a new feature, so I assume it'll apply here too), or remove the bar and stick the shortcuts you want in your normal shortcut bar/new shortcut bar.
