    Default Swear rule

    http://forums.eyesonff.com/showthread.php?t=45412

    OK, I see this topic.

I still fail to understand why bad words are censored. Well, I have been banned for a week from EoEo forums for saying skipping the evil censorip system by puting ? instead of "s" or "v" instead of "u", so I guess I have the right to ask exactly what is wrong. OK, so The Evil F-Word That Is a Rude Version For Sexual Intercourse may not be well sounding, but it serves well from some prupouse, and after all, who does not swear?

So there, I make this fornicating topic. Probably I also do it because I can't sleep, copulation! Excrementish insomnia.

So well, exactly, why is that on the rules? It's not that I wish to annoy anyone, it's that I simply fail to understand it. Of course, once I got banned from a forum for posting a Velázquez painting of a naked Venus...can I ask if that is against the rules? Actually...where are the rules written? O_o

The rules are in the FAQ. "No swearing" is a rule we've had for a long time; in general, a bit of harmless profanity may be overlooked, if it's considered appropriate in the particular circumstance. However, swearing is considered by many to be unpleasant and distasteful; it can easily lead to some serious flaming, which is something else we don't want. There are usually better, more meaningful ways to express yourself than by swearing several times in the one sentence. The more offensive a particular word is, the less likely it'll be that you're permitted to use it. Now, a lot of people do swear frequently in real life, and that's entirely up to them. However, that doesn't automatically mean it should be fine to do so here. The EoFF rules are in place to make an environment that's comfortable and hospitable for the members as a whole. Everyone can be expected to be bound by the rules, whether they like them or not. Afte all, I suspect that a heck of a lot of people here have massive pr0n collections, however I've never seen anyone protest against the "no pr0n" rule. Only the "no swearing" rule gets targetted...
Actually, we've been treating swearing quite lightly in recent months. People have got away with a lot more than they would in the past. However, it's just got worse and worse, with pointless and blatant profanity appearing all over the place.

As for nude paintings... that's a different matter. The "no pornography" rule is strict and will be enforced without mercy. However, each matter is still looked at on a case-by-case basis. If you post a painting in order to discuss its artistic merits, then that'd usually be fine. However, if you posted a nude Venus painting in a thread called "omg hot!!!11!!1" or something (basically, if you're intended to present the picture as pornography rather than art), it'll cause trouble. If you're unsure, then the best approach is to PM a mod or admin with a description of what you want to post and why. They'll tell you if it's acceptable or not.

I wouldn't say a nude painting is pornographic if the topic is dealt with maturely, though that itself is asking a lot.

No swearing makes this place look much cleaner and makes people look much more intelligent. What we usually say is that if it's too hard for you to not type out certain words then there are plenty of other places on the internet that will allow you to do so.

Yeah, I have no problem with swearing, in fact, I have a bit of a potty mouth myself, but EoEO ain't the place to have it. I've noticed that it's perfectly okay using 'damn', as I use it myself quite a bit, but anything other than that, I suggest keep away from. About the reason behind the swearing, there are many younger members of EoFF that may have a problem with swearing, so it's best to limit it as much as possible.

It's against the rules to use certain swear words. That's pretty simple to understand, I think.

If we don't allow swearing why allow a Venus nude? If we DID allow swearing why not allow porn?

Its all a matter of where we've chosen to draw the line. You have discovered that line, now please respect it while you're here.

So the line is that most minor swear words are acceptable, to a limit, but when it comes to the f-word, anything that comes close to the actual spelling, is purely off-limit.

Apparently, I have been declared banished.

This is the best way to look at it: Don't swear. If someone gets away with the odd swear word, so be it. They can consider themselves lucky. We might have allowed it for something such as a story in the writer's corner, or else we just figured that it was okay for this one time - we have the power to decide on that kind of stuff.

But if you want a line as to when it is allowed and when it isn't, there isn't a line, or if there is it's very hazy. The only way to be sure that you won't get punished is to not swear at all.

Personally, I would only swear in a poem/story in the Writer's Corner, and obviously I wouldn't do it excessively there, either - just in such a way as to show what kind of characters I have in a story.

If you really feel the need to swear, PM a mod/admin showing what you would post and ask if they think it's okay or not. Be prepared for a "no" and don't argue with the decision.

All 'swear words' has a 'non swear word' synonym or euphemism. Therefore it's utterly and thoroughly unnecessary to swear. Even if you wished to use an expletive to 'enhance' a sentence, you should be smart enough to phrase it so it has a similar connotation.

Incidentally I can write rather insulting things without swearing or even using idioms or slurs. Those are also not allowed in these fora I think. So it's not just swearing and explicit content.

No, no, I know swearing ends with punishment blah, blah, blah, I know it is a rule. It is not hard to understand, I am not THAT stupid. I am not asking why I must follow the rule, I am asking why is it there.

OK, you talk about puting a good climate and stuff, and that there are better words to express something. To the good climate, I don't feel swearing creates anything bad, at least not in a forum, I guess that it's not for the parliment or to speak with the boss, but this is not a company or anything like that, it is a forum. Is someone actually bothered by bad words? Seriously! Is any of you offended by reading The Fatal F-word? Don't you all say it from time to time? I don't think it is creating a bad climate. In fact, I believe the fact my words are being censored by where-do-babies-come-from-ing emoticons creates a worst climate, I feel as if being treated like a child or something.

The words for expressing something. OK, I could use different words, I can understand, but I cannot express it the same way. Swearing gives a certain emphasis on the expression, even if it is not elegant. Holy unpleasant-substance-found-when-you-don't-flush-the-toilet! It's a Final Fantasy forum. In fact, in Final Fantasy VIII, Squall uses the F-word and the S-word :rolleyes2 Well, at least in the Spanish translation.

Afte all, I suspect that a heck of a lot of people here have massive pr0n collections, however I've never seen anyone protest against the "no pr0n" rule. Only the "no swearing" rule gets targetted...
I think we can all understand the porn rule. Why do you call it pr0n anyway? Just asking, it's not an "I-want-to-offend" question. It's that I haven't seen you using weird internet languages before, just wondered why you do it with that particular word. What? Let me be curious ¬¬

So I still fail to see the reason. I could if someone was actually ofended by bad words, but I don't know anyone. And if someone is, please tell me why. Don't we all live surrounded by sewaring? It's as if someone from Tahiti gets offended by seeing a woman's breasts!

Thats fine for you, but you'll find that a lot of people feel differently. Why do we feel this way? Well... why do you feel the way you do? Because that's the way things are and if the no-swearing rule is so easy to understand then we shouldn't have to have everyone post and explain why we do or don't like swearing.

    ...

So there is a rule but you can't explain why?

There's this guy called Sean. He created a MB called Eyes on Final Fantasy. He didn't want people swearing so it was made against the rules to swear. The end.

If you want me to shut up, tell me. I saw a message on the forum by Unne telling me that if I did not like the language rule, I should adress that issue here. And that is what I am doing, after all I have been banned because of that. OK, it's a ban for a week, not a big deal, specially since I am on exams week and I wasn't going to post that much. Still, if I really bother you that much, I can end the discussion and simply accept the rule without questioning it, I don't want problems with the mods anyway. I'm bad enough as I am.

I also look very cute with my mouth shut.
