I'm very much in favour of 8-Bit sprite avatars, but the choice is yours to make. If you're having major problems, take a trip into the Help Forum and make a request in the "Avatar/Signature Service" threads. I'm sure someone *cough*Baloki*cough* will be happy to help you out.
